Intern Story - Sumer Cooley
During my final semester of school, I have had the privilege of interning at the Women In Charge organization. It has been both a fulfilling and eye opening experience.
I came to Women In Charge with no previous experience in social services, but was very eager to learn and help in any way that I could. I have obtained great admiration for the wonderful women who run Women in Charge. They are doing such a great thing by sharing their time and wisdom with the women who participate in the program.
During my time at Women In Charge, I have been given the opportunity to teach the computer class and do some one on one tutoring. This has given me a chance to get to know the dedicated, hard working women who participate in the program. It has been so fulfilling for me to teach women who really appreciate what they are learning. I know that they have all had hard lives and it takes a great deal of commitment for them to stick with the program. And for this, I have come to look up to these women as well. Most have children and jobs, but still manage to make it everyday in the hopes of obtaining their GED.
I have learned that you can only learn so much in the classroom when it comes to working in social services. It is the “on site” experience that has taught me how to put what I have learned in the classroom into action. I am unsure of my future plans, but I know one thing for sure; my experience with Women In Charge will be one that aids me in whatever direction I decide to go.
Thank you to all of the women who have made my experience so rewarding!
