Children's Program Space Remodeled

Picture a large, rectangular basement, with band-aid colored walls and cold stone floors.  A few incandescent bulbs help the sunlight that tries to peek in through the tiny windows.  Restroom facilities consist of a toilet in a broom closet.  Not ideal for a children’s program, but it served for twelve years as the Women In Charge Children’s Program.

This spring, Catholic Charities, the landlord for Women In Charge, began construction on a new facility, which forced the removal of the children’s program.  Fortunately Catholic Charities allowed Women In Charge to move the children’s program into a new space, in an adjoining building.

The new space is actually larger and brighter, however heating & cooling work were needed along with painting, plumbing and new storage to replace the built-in shelving in the old location.

In a stroke of good fortune, the Mental Health Board was accepting proposals for Capital Improvement grants for children of the city of St. Louis.  Because a significant part of our population is from the city, and Women In Charge provides both counseling and parent mentoring, Women In Charge was selected for the much needed grant.
